Sailing The Pacific

SJ P2 No3 2003

- Sailing the Pacific

We are learning about traditional sailing and navigation methods used by early Polynesian voyagers.

Activity 1 - WALT locate, identify, select and present relevant information.

Traditional Pacific Navigators found land by looking for signs like clouds, birds, stars and ocean swells.

Use the text to help you complete the table about traditional Pacific navigation tools. The first one has been done for you.

Clouds

Clouds moving across the sky slow down when they pass over land

The colour of the clouds would change if they were above land.

Birds

Watching these birds the Shearwater and Godwit helped to lead voyagers to land because they migrate on land.

Stars

At night, certain stars always rise and set at the horizon.

Ocean Swells

Ocean swells, or other unusual movements in the water, could be a sign that land was near.

Activity 2 - Read about the tirito ‘etu (or starpeeker)

The tirito ‘etu (or starpeeker) is a navigating instrument from the Cook Islands. It was made from an empty coconut shell with holes drilled in it. Water was filled to the level of the lower ring of holes. This helped to keep it lined up with the horizon as the boat moved up and down in the waves. The navigator looked through two of the holes until the reflection of a particular star came into view. The holes were positioned so that the star could be seen only when the vaka was directly east or west of its destination.

Activity 3 - The Vaka

Use the text to help you answer the following questions about ‘The Vaka’

What type of natural materials were used to build the vaka?

Two hulls made from many long planks carefully stitched together with cord made from coconut fibre. Their sails were often woven from pandunus leaves.

How long was Kupe’s vaka and how many people could it carry?

Some of these ocean going vaka could carry up to 150 people. Kupe’s vaka may have been up to 21 metres long.

What supplies were often carried on board?

Dried bananas, taro, breadfruit, coconut and fish.

Raranga Matahiko Waitangi Visit

The second time my class ,Te Manga went to Waitangi we all made atleast one pou each. My pou represents all of the challenges that people had to go through in their Waka. Before we went all of us played chain tag on the giant field just outside Waitangi.

Kūaka

We are learning to use visual language features to support our understanding of the ideas and information in the text.

I really liked making this poster and being creative with it. The part that I found tricky was finding words out of the book for a vocabulary sheet.

Raranga Matahiko

On the first week of term three 2020 my class called Te Manga and me drove in a bus, it was not any bus though it was an amazing bus that took my whole class on a tiki-tour all the way to Waitangi from Paparore school! As soon as the bus pulled in  to Waitangi I was over excited. When I jumped out of the bus I saw Whaea Keri, she took us to the class we were going in. We all had a korero waiting for Whaea Kristina to come into the classroom. The people that were in my group was Grace, Zana and me. The first thing my group did is book creater, the next thing that we did was called Virtual Reality.
This is a picture of me at the V.R .

My favourite thing about going to Waitangi was doing sculpt GL.

Matariki

We are learning all about Matariki.

The thing that was interesting for me is learning how to make all sorts of different Matariki arts. Another thing that I found interesting is all of the new stories I heard that is about Matariki.
The reason I found the art interesting is because I really like art and I really like seeing what other blends I can make. The reason I found the stories interesting is because I really like seeing ways other people do things.

Make Your Own Manu Tukutuku At Home

The thing that surprised me in my learning is that Plaidies is another name for Matariki. The thing that I enjoyed the most is the Scratch Project.

The thing that I did well is making all the different art. The thing that was tricky for me is making the
Scratch Project.  The thing that I could do better next time is put a bit more effort into my scratch project.

Here is my unfinished Scratch Project.

Celebrating Puanga at Ramanui

WALT find out what students at one school do to celebrate the Māori New Year. WALT to use the main ideas to summarise the text.
I really enjoyed learning about Puanga and that they did a time capsule. The thing that surprised me was that Puanga isn't actually part of the Matariki cluster. The thing that I found really interesting is what Ramanui school did to celebrate Māori new year.

What did I do well? The thing that I did well is read the book with my group and use it to find information for my reading. Click on this link to see the book and the other link for the audio book.

The thing that was tricky for me was making the google drawings and put in writing. I think I could add more writing, info and maybe just a little bit more detail.

The Plastic Free Challenge

WALT find out some of the causes, effects, and solutions for plastic pollution.

The thing that I found interesting is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that has lots of rubbish mostly thrown out from humans. Also how much plastic that the students of Room 5 at Motueka South School found only through a little walk. I think that I can use beeswax wrap instead of glad wrap and other plastic that you might use at school. At home every time I go on a walk I will always pick up rubbish and pick up plastic when I play in my backyard.

The thing that I did well is read the book in a group and use the book to find information for my slide. The thing that I found tricky is making the slide and find out what I can do to add a bit more into my slide. The way that I can extend myself next time is by using a bit more detail and making sure that my slide is completely finished at the right time.

My Bubble Memories

We are sharing memories from our lock down bubble.

Me and my class have been making a slide about what we have done in our bubble. I have been working on this slide about my bubble memories with my mum at home and I do it at school. I have had to write it into my writing book, put on a document, make a slide and then put it on my blog.

The thing that I did well is make my slide. The thing that I found tricky is finding pictures of my family to put on my slide.
The thing that I could  do next time is put a little bit more detail in my writing.
If you would like to see my classes learning click on this link.

The Striped Invader

WALT find out some interesting facts and information about wasps. I have learnt that if there was no Queen there will be no life for the wasps. I have found all of the information from a book on my class site. I think the thing that I did well is doing all the facts about wasps. The thing that I found tricky was making the life cycle on my slide. I think I could of added a bit more detail in my slide. You can still look at my slide though.
please comment on my slide.

Cats - who needs them?

WALT understand both sides of the cat debate and make our own decisions from what we read.

- Cats, Who Needs Them

Activity 1
Use the article to answer the following questions:

1. How many pet cats are there in New Zealand?
1,500,000 ✅
2. Why do some people want to get rid of cats from New Zealand?
Because they eat native animals ✅
3. What are the three kinds of cats according to the law?
Companion cats, stray cats and feral cats ✅
4. Why might a cat become stray?
Because they lost their home ✅
5. What uses do cats have?
Cats can get mice, rats and flies also crickets ✅

Activity 2
Complete the cloze activity using the words in the box.

collar    feral    microchip  popular protect neutered    birds  endangered

Cats are one of New Zealand’s most popular pets.  They provide company and comfort to many people, but they can also be killers.  They catch small animals, and birds, and don’t care if the bird is a common sparrow or an endangered  black robin. There are three kinds of cats; companion cats, stray cats and feral cats. People have thought of many other ways to help protect our native birds and animals from cats.   One idea is to put a collar which contains all the owner’s details in all cats.  This means that if someone finds a lost cat it can be returned home and will not become part of the stray cat population.  Other ideas are keeping cats indoors when possible; having cats neutered to stop them having too many kittens; putting a microchip and bell on every cat and making sure all cats are well-fed and cared for.

Activity 3
Has this article changed the way you think about cats?
Write 2-3 sentences to explain what you’re thinking.
I have changed my mind.
because at the top of the page cats can get things like rats and mice and flies.

Elephant Passion Project

I have been searching up a lot of things about elephants.
I have also asked my family if they want to learn something about  elephants.
I have chose elephants for my passion project because they are my favourite animal and because I wanted to learn more about them.

Kawa Of Care Assembly - Draft Writing

WALT understand the 'Kawa of Care'.

WALT write a recount about our assembly experience.

Check out my draft writing ...

Last Funky Friday on the 28.2.2020 at 1.45pm it was Te Manga’s Class Assembly. There were actors, actresses, teachers smiling, audience laughing and the children of Paparore school! We danced in with the cat-walk. It was almost time for my turn. I got prepared, put my glasses on and got sauted. That was when I got butterflies in my stomach and felt really nervous. Finally the time came, it was my turn to shine.  My group went out and I did my part, my part was playing as the teacher. At the last part of my groups turn we all had to say make sure your in the right place at the right time online!!! When Tuva-Lisa said make sure you always follow the Kawa of Care!!! Our whole class had to say Kawa of Care and do our super hero pose when Tuva-Lisa said Kawa of Care. After the assembly I felt so proud of myself.

On Sea Week I learnt why our seas are so special to us and why we need to care for our seas. We all had to check-out the cool website called the Young Ocean Explorers. The interesting thing that I have learnt that Fish has scales for many reasons. I found challenging finding a picture of different sea creatures.

Rugby World Cup 2019

In Te Manga we have been learning about the Rugby World Cup. My country is Georgia and I've learnt that there is some strange animals in Georgia.

Yesterday I thought that we were the most colourful class in the school! Thats because we dressed up in our different countries. I learnt that learning about different countries is lots of fun that you can do on the last school days. I think that Georgia has the most strangest animals in all the countries in the world.
Whaea Deb and Riley were supporting Japan.
I was supporting Georgia!

Look at our amazing pictures!
